Foreword:
In a world where our greatest teachers and mentors sit behind a desk in our schools, starting in March of 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic became a teacher for all of us. 
The pandemic has taught us that now more than ever our public schools are a vital part of our communities. They are places for students and their families to receive meals, they are testing and vaccination sites, and most importantly they are places where children go to discover themselves and their futures. 
For the past four years CPS Lives has been dedicated to sharing with the world the importance of public education through the creation of artwork, not only for the young people who walk through those doors every day but for their surrounding neighborhoods as well. When our schools shut down for the majority of 2020 it felt like a piece of our hearts had been missing. Education is the beating heart of all communities and with school moved online that beating heart needed to work even harder to re-create the irreplaceable connection our schools provide for us. 
In tandem CPS Lives needed to work even harder to tell the stories of such a historic time for education and art, and a time where art can provide the general public with an outlet to process their grievances and find hope in what the future may hold. The pandemic has taught us, and continues to teach us, life altering lessons that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. This zine is a marker of the resilience and strength our public schools, artists, and community members possess and will be a piece of history we can all look back on and remember what we have learned. 
We would like to thank the teachers, principals, coaches, guidance counselors, nurses, volunteers and so many others who have been able to support the next generation despite these tumultuous times.
